Nursing students

Nursing students in their first year of study at Queen’s normally spend the first 6–8 weeks of their course at Queen’s, then go on work placement for 6–8 weeks before returning to Queen’s for a further 6–8 weeks. So whether you are moving home for your placement, or staying in Belfast, we can offer the following options:

Option 1:
Short-term (6–8 weeks) accommodation – Guthrie House (mixed male/female)
Single standard study bedrooms in Guthrie House. Single rooms cost £78.96 per week, inclusive of heating, electricity and internet access. No deposit is necessary and payment for the full stay must be made in full at check-in.

Option 2:
Full Year accommodation (38 week contract)
This is offered on the same basis as to a first year undergraduate student. Please read the Allocation Policy available to view on this website:

• Elms Village (en suite and standard rooms)

• Queen’s Houses (76 Malone Road, 12 College Gardens)

• Grant House (no alcohol)

Lifestyle options are available to choose:

• Single Sex accommodation (Elms Village)

• Quiet Living accommodation (Elms Village)

• No Alcohol accommodation (Elms Village and Grant House)

A contract for the full residential year (38 or 50 weeks) can be arranged, but please note that the contract is binding and you will not be released from it even if any of your work placements are closer to home. A deposit* of £300 is required.

Details of what it is like to live in these types of accommodation can be found in the section ‘Types of Accommodation’.

Guarantees

Students coming from outside Northern Ireland in their first year of study at Queen’s are guaranteed a place in accommodation if they apply by 1 August 2010. Please read the Allocation Policy available to view on this website.

Where do I go to apply?

You can complete an application online, please see the section ‘How to apply’. Computer terminals to apply online are available at Elms Village from 1 June 2010.

To be eligible for a place in university accommodation you will need to have met the following criteria:

• Applied for accommodation before 1 August 2010

• Be accepted onto a course at Queen’s at the time of allocation (i.e. once exam results have been published your academic status must be unconditional firm UF)

• Those students applying for a 38 or 50 week contract must pay a £300* deposit when applying.

What if I do not get offered a place?

If you have applied for a place in Queen’s accommodation, met all the deadlines and criteria, but we are unable to offer you a room, you will need to look for a place to live in the private sector. If you have paid a deposit it will be refunded.

Looking in the private sector

If you would like to live in the private sector the accommodation team can help you with your search. Accommodation details can be viewed online in the property search database at www.nistudentpad.co.uk

Students’ Union support

The Students’ Union also offers support for students house-hunting in the private sector. To find out more information go to the Students’ Union website at www.qubsu.org and click on Advice Centre.

Other key considerations

The University’s residential year commences on Saturday 18 September 2010. If you are commencing your Nursing or Midwifery course in September 2010 teaching will begin before 18 September with the School’s inductions taking place from early September 2010. If you intend to check-in early to meet these dates then you may not initially be able to gain access to the particular room that you have been allocated for the term of your contract. Should that be the case an alternative room will be provided until your allocated room becomes available. If arriving early you will be required to pay for any additional nights.

If your final offer is for the February/March 2011 intake, you can apply for accommodation between 1–30 November 2010.

*Students from Northern Ireland postcode areas BT1 to BT21, BT26 to BT28, BT36 to BT39 will be placed on a waiting list and will be allocated accommodation after all other Queen’s students have been processed. Students in these postcodes are not required to pay a £300 deposit with their application; a deposit will be collected when they are offered a room. Further details regarding the allocation policy for accommodation can be found on this website.

Please note that students who have already completed either their first year of an undergraduate degree at Queen’s or are returning to complete a second undergraduate or postgraduate degree are classed as ‘returning students‘ and not undergraduate students in their first year of study. For information regarding returning students please see ‘All other students’.
